Quick answer

From 11 September 2026, Vietnam and Italy apply the 1961 Apostille Convention. For public documents within the scope of the Convention, an Apostille from the competent Vietnamese authority replaces the former consular legalisation. However, the documents, translations and supporting evidence required still depend on the purpose and on the authority receiving the file. Apply for the Apostille in Vietnam — the Vietnamese Embassy in Italy does not issue it. An Italian translation, certified by the Italian mission, is still needed.

Apostille in place of legalisation

  • Vietnam deposited its accession on 31 December 2025; the Convention entered into force for Vietnam on 11 September 2026 (HCCH).
  • The HCCH status table lists objections only from Czechia, Austria and Germany; Italy did not object, so the Convention applies between Vietnam and Italy.
  • The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: for Convention countries the Apostille replaces legalisation, issued by the competent national authority.
  • The Vietnamese Embassy in Italy does not issue Apostilles; Vietnamese documents go to the Vietnamese Apostille authority (details at apostille.lanhsuvietnam.gov.vn).
  • An Apostille certifies the signature, the capacity of the signer and the seal; it does not certify the content of the document.

Steps

  1. Ask the receiving office

Which documents, copies and translation it needs depends on the purpose.

  2. Get the Apostille in Vietnam

From the competent Vietnamese authority (receiving office, documents, fees and time at apostille.lanhsuvietnam.gov.vn).

  3. Translate into Italian

The mission publishes a non-exhaustive list of translators for reference.

  4. Have the translation certified

MAECI requires translations certified as conforming to the original; where there are no officially recognised translators, the consular office certifies. Book by email (hochiminh.consolato@esteri.it or consolare.hanoi@esteri.it).

Frequently asked questions

Do Vietnamese documents for Italy still need consular legalisation?
From 11 September 2026, public documents within the Apostille Convention need an Apostille from the competent Vietnamese authority instead. Documents outside the Convention (issued by diplomatic or consular agents, or commercial and customs documents) still follow legalisation.
With an Apostille, is my Italian visa file complete?
Not necessarily. An Apostille only authenticates the signature and seal. The documents, translations and evidence required still depend on the purpose and the receiving authority.
How much does certifying a translation cost?
€13 per sheet under the consular fee table; free when used for registration in the Italian civil registry.
